DESCRIPTION:Effectively dealing with the climate crisis and other environmental crises will require us to rethink our fundamental assumptions about how humans relate to each other and the natural world\, via our participation in the global economy. In this presentation\, we will explore how our current “extractive” approach to generating products and services got us into this mess\, and how we can get out of it by moving to a more “regenerative” economic model. Here in upstate New York\, we are well positioned to lead this transition\, beginning with some simple changes in how climate advocates talk about the journey ahead.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Presenter\nAbigail McHugh-Grifa was a founding member of the Climate Solutions Accelerator of the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region and New York State’s first Mothers Out Front chapter. Her early climate advocacy work also included co-coordinating Rochester’s Citizens’ Climate Lobby chapter. She currently serves as the Accelerator’s Executive Director and is a member of New York State’s Climate Justice Working Group. SUMMARY:July Chapter Meeting - Transforming Materials Management through Community ReUse:  Simple Solutions for a Complex World
DESCRIPTION:Finger Lakes ReUse is an award-winning organization celebrating its 15th year serving residents of Tompkins County and beyond. With thousands of material donors and shoppers weekly and retail sales from its two ReUse Centers growing an average of 20% annually for the last 10 years\, the business and demand for services is growing\, and while the work is labor-intensive\, worker engagement is strong and workforce development opportunities abound. With more than 80 living wage employees\, 10 apprentices\, 10 youth workers and hundreds of volunteers\, more than 750\,000 items were kept in use in 2022\, at an average price of $3.20 per item. \nU.S. waste is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions\, while burning fossil fuels is the primary contributor. Creating a model set of systems to help effectively and comprehensively capture and divert 100% of the potentially reusable\, recyclable\, compostable and repairable materials and minimizing ongoing production and transport of materials with value is not a small consideration\, and will require collaboration and focus. The good news is that this is an effort that appeals across the political spectrum\, and conversations in NYS and across the country are actively ongoing to create a more effective\, just\, and comprehensive materials management system to effectively manage the waste that currently is plaguing our communities and our planet. \nFinger Lakes ReUse has received several honors\, including the New York State Environmental Excellence Award\, the Environmental Champion Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\, Recovery Friendly Employer of the Year from the Alcohol & Drug Council of Tompkins County\, Nonprofit of the Year from the Chamber of Commerce\, and Ithaca Times Best of Ithaca Awards for each of the last 5 years. \nBIO \nDiane Cohen is chief executive officer of Finger Lakes ReUse\, Inc.\, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2007 in Ithaca\, NY to help Tompkins County transform waste into community value\, and has been working professionally in material management since 2001. \nNow operating two Community ReUse Centers among other programs\, Diane is working collaboratively with numerous multi-sector partners to design a more effective materials management system for reusable and repairable materials to remain circulating in the local economy. \nDiane was honored to receive the eChievement Award from eTown Radio in 2017 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from NYSAR3 (New York State Association for Reduction\, Reduce & Recycling) in 2021. \n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nMeeting ID: 958 6631 3240\nPasscode: NYRocks

DESCRIPTION:Clean Energy & Equity for Low-Income Homes\n\n\nDr. Gay Nicholson\, President\, Sustainable Finger Lakes\n\n\nThurs. June 15\, 7:00-8:30 pm\n\n\nSustainable Finger Lakes has run its local carbon offset fund\, Finger Lakes Climate Fund\, since 2010 with a focus on addressing the twin challenges of climate change and income inequality. Climate Fund grants have been given to 86 households across 12 counties of the region to help pay for insulation\, air sealing\, and heat pumps. In recent years\, they have boosted their impact by winning grants from NYSERDA and Tompkins County to provide substantial subsidies for heat pump installations in the homes of lower-income families. In 2023\, they launched two pilot projects to bring heat pumps into two housing sectors that have received the least amount of state and federal clean energy support: mobile homes and low-income rentals in 1-4 unit buildings. SUMMARY:April Chapter Meeting: Tompkins County Food System Plan - Roadmap for our Future
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Don Barber\, Chair\, Tompkins Food Policy Council \nEveryone fully participates in our food system every day by the choices we make to feed ourselves and our family. Most of us are unaware there is a strong connection between the climate crisis and our food system. The global food system releases fully one third of the annual greenhouse gas emissions. It doesn’t have to be this way\, as there are food choice changes that consumers can make to significantly reduce GHG emissions. There are agricultural practices that apply to gardens up to large farms which will sequester much more carbon in soil. Join us on April 20th to learn about our local food system; its impact on the climate and climate’s impact on agriculture and the role our everyday decisions can have to reduce GHG emissions and support carbon capture.\nDon Barber is Chair of the Tompkins Food Policy Council. In the 1980’s he was chair of the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter’s Finger Lakes Group\, then Chair of the Tompkins County Environmental Management Council\, then Caroline Town Supervisor for 22 years which was the second municipality in NY to purchase 100% of its municipal energy from renewable sources and build a Town Office building powered by the sun and heated by the earth. He grew up on a family dairy farm and currently farms in Brooktondale which is fully solar powered and uses draft horses for a good share of the field work.\nIn 2019\, he and other members of the Tompkins Food Policy Council lobbied the County Legislature to fund staffing to develop a Food System Plan for Tompkins County; and then secured funding from the Community Foundation of Tompkins County for programming costs. Last summer\, they delivered a Food System Plan\, from over 2000 voices\, which was unanimously accepted by the County Legislature. Krasny shows us the power of “network climate action”—the idea that our own ordinary acts can influence and inspire those close to us. Through this spread of climate-conscious practices\, our individual actions become collective ones that can eventually effect widespread change. \nWeaving examples of everyday climate-forward initiatives in with insights on behavioral and structural change\, Krasny demonstrates how we can scale up the impact of our efforts through leveraging our community connections. DESCRIPTION:Prof. Marianne Krasny of Cornell University\, a member of our Chapter\, will speak on how climate activists can influence the 2023-28 Farm Bill. This huge bill—slated to be funded at $648 billion ($160 billion larger than Inflation Reduction Act expenditures)—has multiple opportunities for reducing methane and nitrous oxide from livestock and dairy farms and for promoting eating that is healthy for humans and the planet. Hear about why we will not be able to reach our climate emissions goals without tackling food systems.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarianne Krasny is a professor in Natural Resources and the Environment at Cornell University where she directs the Civic Ecology Lab. She volunteers for Elders Climate Action\, Climate Action Now\, and the Finger Lakes Chapter of Climate Reality. DESCRIPTION:Our June chapter meeting with be a joint event hosted by our chapter and the Western New York chapter. \nSpeaker: Lisa Taranto\, “Thank the Soil for Everything!” \nBeneath our feet there is a thin layer of complex and sophisticated activity which never fully stops. Some might call it magical. Trillions of life forms are constantly exchanging information and energy. And this tiny to microscopic life is what supports terrestrial viability. And like all natural systems\, it is seriously compromised by human activity. The dynamic relationships between bacteria\, fungi\, decomposers and the rhizosphere are only recently revealing their stories to us\, as they have been quietly working in the dark for eons. We will look at the BIG picture of the consequences our actions have had on global soils\, and current understandings of where we are headed\, and what can be done to rebuild respect and regeneration of this incredibly fascinating realm. \nOur chapter meetings are held on Zoom.
