SUMMARY:July Chapter Meeting - Transforming Materials Management through Community ReUse: Simple Solutions for a Complex World
DESCRIPTION:Finger Lakes ReUse is an award-winning organization celebrating its 15th year serving residents of Tompkins County and beyond. With thousands of material donors and shoppers weekly and retail sales from its two ReUse Centers growing an average of 20% annually for the last 10 years\, the business and demand for services is growing\, and while the work is labor-intensive\, worker engagement is strong and workforce development opportunities abound. With more than 80 living wage employees\, 10 apprentices\, 10 youth workers and hundreds of volunteers\, more than 750\,000 items were kept in use in 2022\, at an average price of $3.20 per item. \nU.S. waste is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions\, while burning fossil fuels is the primary contributor. Creating a model set of systems to help effectively and comprehensively capture and divert 100% of the potentially reusable\, recyclable\, compostable and repairable materials and minimizing ongoing production and transport of materials with value is not a small consideration\, and will require collaboration and focus. The good news is that this is an effort that appeals across the political spectrum\, and conversations in NYS and across the country are actively ongoing to create a more effective\, just\, and comprehensive materials management system to effectively manage the waste that currently is plaguing our communities and our planet. \nFinger Lakes ReUse has received several honors\, including the New York State Environmental Excellence Award\, the Environmental Champion Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\, Recovery Friendly Employer of the Year from the Alcohol & Drug Council of Tompkins County\, Nonprofit of the Year from the Chamber of Commerce\, and Ithaca Times Best of Ithaca Awards for each of the last 5 years. \nBIO \nDiane Cohen is chief executive officer of Finger Lakes ReUse\, Inc.\, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2007 in Ithaca\, NY to help Tompkins County transform waste into community value\, and has been working professionally in material management since 2001. \nNow operating two Community ReUse Centers among other programs\, Diane is working collaboratively with numerous multi-sector partners to design a more effective materials management system for reusable and repairable materials to remain circulating in the local economy. \nDiane was honored to receive the eChievement Award from eTown Radio in 2017 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from NYSAR3 (New York State Association for Reduction\, Reduce & Recycling) in 2021. \n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nMeeting ID: 958 6631 3240\nPasscode: NYRocks

SUMMARY:Book Group Series- "Regeneration" by Paul Hawken\, Session #1
DESCRIPTION:We will have a two-part discussion of Paul Hawken’s “Regeneration: Ending the climate crisis in one generation”. We will hold two sections spaced 4 weeks apart: 1) Monday July 31\, Beginning to page 147 [through People chapter]; and 2) Monday August 28\, Page 148 [The City chapter] to the End. Both sessions will be 7-8 pm.\n\n\nNote from Goodreads:\nA radically new understanding of and practical approach to climate change by noted environmentalist Paul Hawken\, creator of the New York Times bestseller Drawdown\nThe dangers of climate change and a warming world have been in the public eye for fifty years. For three decades\, scientists and the United Nations have urged us to address future existential threats\, an effort that culminated in the 2015 Paris Agreement. Although 188 countries made commitments to prevent global warming from exceeding 2 degrees centigrade\, as of 2021\, 182 failed\, and the G7 countries did not even come close. The result so far: 98 percent of the world is disengaged from the greatest danger civilization has ever faced. Instead\, extreme weather is increasing\, climate migration is disrupting borders and politics in the EU and US\, while fossil fuel energy companies dig in their heals to prevent the advent of renewable energy. Journalistic lingo that says we should combat climate change\, but by using war metaphors\, climate became a story of one more conflict\, a framing that has left out humanity.\n\nIn Regeneration Paul Hawken has flipped the narrative\, bringing people back into the conversation by demonstrating that addressing current human needs rather than future threats is the only path to solving the climate crisis. Regeneration is the first book to define\, delineate\, and set standards for regeneration\, offering a comprehensive explanation of its meaning and application Why regeneration? Because every single economic sector in the world extracts life from the planet and by doing so harms it. The way to reverse a heating planet and human indifference is to reverse planetary degeneration.\n\nUsing regeneration as a foundation for understanding and action includes everyone and shows how people the world over can benefit by creating rather than reacting. Regeneration contains an extraordinary array of initiatives that include but go well beyond solar\, electric vehicles\, and tree planting to include such solutions as marine protected areas\, bioregions\, azolla fern\, food localization\, regenerative agriculture\, forest farms\, and the #1 solution for the world: electrifying everything.\n\nPaul Hawken and the non-profit Regeneration are launching a series of initiatives to accompany the book that will include a streaming video series\, curriculum\, podcasts\, teaching videos\, and climate action software. Regeneration is the inspiring and needed guide to inform the burgeoning climate movement.\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nMeeting ID: 926 2795 7489\nPasscode: NYRocks
